Across the nation, universities are embarking on a commitment called,“The Real Food Challenge.” The primary campaign of this program is to shift $1,000,000,000 of universities' existing budgets away from industrial farm products.
The goal is to redirect budgets toward local/community based, fair, ecologically sound and humane food; “Real Food” by 2020.
Students are dismantling the opacity in their schools purchasing systems and demanding purchasing plans that act in accordance with the ethics of its students.
Universities and their students have purchasing power and with each dollar they are dictating which industries they wish to support.
Hampshire College has already achieved tremendous progress with it’s Healthy Food Transition. Our school is committed to sourcing 100% of it’s food locally by 2020.
Hampshire also has the advantage of having a working farm and a contract with Bon Appetit, a catering service committed to Hampshire’s appetite for local and fair trade food. However, this movement is bigger than purchasing locally. It is about thinking globally and networking nationally.
The incoming students of Hampshire are investing in more than our school. We are invested in food system change on a national level. The food we purchase is transparent, but our work is not done until it reflects an ethical nation.
