There has been sustained and dedicated community interest in the development of a skate park in the Eastern area of Sutherland Shire since 1997.
The skate park was intended to create a family-friendly environment which would bring together youths and families from all areas within the Sutherland Shire, as well as promote and encourage outdoor activities and social interaction
However, shortly after small developments began, various interest groups such as Cronulla residents strongly contested the proposed location of Wanda Hills primarily due to fears of devaluing their properties and the potential for drug use, violence and thuggery.
This year property developers and the Southern Shire Council made a very political and quick decision to relocate the proposed area of skate park to Captain Cook Road in Kurnell. However this area lacks adequate public transport and is therefore not accessible to skate boarders.
We, the undersigned, call on Sutherland Shire Council to install and fund a community shuttle bus, traveling to and from the new Kurnell location.
We ask that the bus travels regularly throughout the day (approx. every 30 minutes), and that a number of new pick-up locations are advertised and implemented.
This shuttle bus will not only promote the use of the skate park, but will encourage safe travel from a number of locations within the Sutherland Shire area.
