We petition to shorten the length of summer break between school years to have the extended days that school would be attended shorter. Summer break is a little over 2 months long and that more than suffices a mental break and enough time to participate in community service deeds, camps, and other activities students accompany their summer with. Longer school days ultimately result in increased fatigue in students which impairs their learning abilities over time. Contrarily, shorter school days allow students more time at home to finish their homework and an opportunity to sleep at a reasonable time on the daily. "First, a sleep-deprived person cannot focus attention optimally and therefore cannot learn efficiently. Second, sleep itself has a role in the consolidation of memory, which is essential for learning new information" (2007). Information from a resource from the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, just an example of the vast amounts of studies that prove sleep is essential in regards to retaining and applying new information.

We, the undersigned, call on the Florida Board of Education to elongate the mandatory school days students are legally obligated to attend while in doing so, shortening each day by at least one hour.
