NJ Governor Phil Murphy says "We are All in This Together" when he publicly discusses the financial sacrifices New Jersey residents must make to combat COVID-19, by staying home and not working, limiting our ability to earn a living, His actions do not match his words. He is protecting certain public sector employees from any sacrifice at all via legislation he has signed. This is hypocritical and is not in keeping with his mantra that "we are all in this together"
We, the undersigned,
Wholeheartedly support New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy’s stirring words, repeated many times over, regarding the Covid-19 pandemic,” We are all in this together!”
Agree that Murphy’s COVID-19 related Executive Orders restricting business activities in New Jersey have resulted in large-scale lost income, unemployment and financial distress among our private sector business owners and their employees.
Agree that the financial sacrifices suffered by the private sector as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic are pervasive and likely to be long-lasting.
Agree that New Jersey public sector employees have not borne any financial sacrifices from any of Murphy’s COVID-19 related Executive Orders.
Agree that, in order to honor the spirit and intent of Murphy’s “We are all in this together” mantra, it is necessary for public sector employees to shoulder their fair share of the financial sacrifice imposed on the private sector.
Are disappointed that New Jersey State Legislature passed a bill that directly contradicts Murphy’s “We are in this all together” mantra, and that Murphy signed this bill into law. The bill, New Jersey State Legislation A-3904/S-2336 guarantees school teachers, school employees, and school contractors as well, will NOT be subjected to any pay cuts, benefit cuts or layoffs, regardless of whether or not the schools actually stay open, regardless of whether or not the school employees will actually be performing any work.
Are disappointed that Murphy chose to bury these provisions at the end of a bill that was advertised as simply authorizing the NJ schools to employ remote learning. If you want to read the full text of this bill, it can be found at https://legiscan.com/NJ/text/A3904/2020.
Demand that Murphy and the New Jersey State Legislature remedy this unjust situation by rescinding NJ State Legislation A-3904/S-2336 immediately.
Implore Governor Murphy and the New Jersey State Legislature to enact new legislation that will impose proportional pay cuts, benefit cuts and/or layoffs on public sector employees in order to reduce some of the tax burden shouldered by private sector employees and business owners, thereby mitigating the financial stress suffered by the private sector as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
We do not wish the public sector employees to bear an unfair burden of COVID-19 pain. We merely wish to spread the financial sacrifices of the COVID-19 pandemic among all New Jerseyans not just the private sector. In this way, New Jerseyans can proudly and truthfully claim “We are all in this together!”
