The Great Neck Park District is considering the installation of an artificial turf field, with a surface layer of crumb rubber, for Little League in Memorial Park -- located in the residential community of the Village of Great Neck.
According to a recent CBS News story (6:00 PM on May 19, 2015) -- "Many towns across Long Island and New Jersey -- as well as New York City – are no longer installing crumb rubber fields."
"The crumb rubber fields may be linked to growing number of cancer cases in young athletes."
In this same story, "NYC Parks Advocate President Geoffrey Croft has been petitioning the city to remove the 200-plus crumb rubber fields currently in local parks."
We are signing our names to this petition to express our strong objection to the Great Neck Park District's plan to install artificial turf on our children's playing fields.
We believe that the crumb rubber used in artificial turf poses completely unnecessary risks to the health of our children, ourselves and the environment.
Rubber tires are not even permitted in landfills due to toxins they release. Why should we allow this product on our playing fields?
What are the Great Neck Park Commissioners thinking? In light of the potential risks, the only reasonable, responsible decision is to abandon all plans to install artificial turf. The Great Neck Park District can be at the forefront of the new initiative to refuse artificial turf for our community.
