Saving the Redland Sharks Football Club

In the early 1970's the football club became known as the Redland Sharks Australian Rules Football Club and the juniors have been called that ever since. The reason why the Redland Sharks Australian Rules Football Club was adopted all those years ago was so the club could be representative of the entire shire and not a particular suburb. Other clubs have known us as the Redland Sharks for over 40 years!

Many Premierships have been won (from Seniors to Juniors) being known as the Redland Sharks Football Club and singing the traditional club song. They have been singing 'Its a Grand Old Flag' since the early 70's - almost 50 years of history right there!

Some families are entering their 3rd generation of family members representing our club. To be playing for a club and singing a song their fathers and grandfathers sung must be very special to all involved.

The Victoria Point Sharks Seniors have imposed themselves upon the Redland Sharks Juniors to align with them, thus winding up almost 50 years of history. The junior committee had a closed meeting and decided to go along with this with no wider club or community consultation.

We still support the alignment of Senior and Junior footy in the Community Football space. This gives our kids a pathway from Juniors to Seniors - but it should have been as Redland Sharks - a name with almost 50 years of heritage as opposed to an entity with 3 years operations.

Sponsorship was offered to the value of $102K over three years just to put the name back to its rightful Redland Sharks and honour history and this was denied without consultation of the community.
