The Village Markets provides a platform for young and emerging designers, artists and new business to showcase their wares on the Gold Coast.
The Village Markets started in October 2008, after six months of planning and council negotiations. The event was created to fill a cultural void on the Gold Coast.
The Village Markets have now been operating for over 18 months, successfully. Attracting stall holders and shoppers from the Sunshine Coast to as far South as Sydney. Over 2,000 shoppers visit this event monthly.
The Village Markets has received a Show Cause Notice from the GCCC for a development application, despite having received written communication 20 months prior clearly stating that this was not required.
Due to the cost of applying for a MCU, The Village Markets may have no other option but to cease to exist.
We're calling upon the Gold Coast City Council to recall the Show Cause Notice and recognise their fault of incorrectly informing the event organisers and/or The Gold Coast City Council to cover the cost of the MCU application fees and show some support for the event.
I, the undersigned, call on the Gold Coast City Council (GCCC) to permit The Village Markets to continue and recall the Show Cause Notice based on the below information.
The Village Markets provides a much needed outlet for emerging designers and artists on the Gold Coast and provides a much needed cultural event on the Gold Coast for locals and tourists alike.
The Village Markets is the only fashion market on the Gold Coast that caters for 15 - 35 year olds. Without The Village Markets, the Gold Coast would not have a monthly cultural event, that is desperately needed, nor would local designers and artists have a platform to allow them to prosper and thrive.
The Village Markets followed the correct procedure prior to inception, however at the fault of the GCCC the event is now being punished and risk’s being cancelled.
By affixing my signature below, I respectfully ask the Gold Coast City Council to review this petition, the support it shows, and consider favourably the request to permit The Village Markets to continue, less a MCU.
