The Niagara Regional Police Mounted Unit has been serving full time, all the residents of Niagara, since 2008. The officers and horses have been providing effective front line policing which include high risk neighbourhood patrols, deterring drug/alcohol and prostitution related offences, downtown bar district patrols of all the cities in the region and crowd control.
Their presence alone is often enough to keep the peace. Most importantly, they have broken the barriers between police and citizens. It is the most popular unit the police service has!
With mounted units forming in Hamilton and Waterloo, why are we getting rid of ours?! The NRPS Mounted Unit is tax payers money very well spent.
Constable Ron Derksen was the NRPS 2009 Officer of the Year and also competed at the North American Police Equestrian Championships in New York this past fall, finishing 6th overall.
The Niagara Region has benefited a great deal from having the Mounted Police Unit.
We the undersigned appeal to the Niagara Regional Police Services Board, Niagara Regional Council, Chief Southall and Deputy Chief Matthews TO CONTINUE the Niagara Regional Police Mounted Unit as a means of keeping the friendly, traditional-style community policing that combines high police visibility and approachability to the police and its services.
