During the recently concluded election Prime Minister Harper promised to eliminate the per-vote subsidy if elected to a majority. The subsidy, which awards parties $2 of public funding for every vote they received in an election, is now under threat of elimination.

Opponents of the subsidy argue that political parties should only survive on the private donations of their members. However, all Canadian's have a vote, but not all may be in the position to donate money to a party they support. Therefore eliminating this subsidy will give an unfair advantage to the wealthy. By maintaining the subsidy we give equality to all parties and all viewpoints based on the most democratic method available: by the number of votes they received.

If you agree please sign the statement below and contact your member of parliament.

Thank you!

Dear Prime Minister,

We, the undersigned, represent Canadians concerned at the effect cancelling the per-vote subsidy will have on our democracy. We believe that the current system is by far the most democratic method available to award public funding to political parties. Canadians who are less financially able to make private donations to political parties will be underrepresented if public campaign financing is eliminated.

Accordingly, we call on you to not eliminate the federal per-vote subsidy and protect equal opportunity of all political parties views, and thus all voters views, to be heard.

Thank you,
