Preservationists have been closely monitoring the conversion of New York’s famed McGraw-Hill Building and are dismayed that preliminary designs for the lobby renovation completely eliminate its one-of-a-kind Art Deco elements and will destroy one of New York City's most over-the-top Art Deco interiors.
The Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) granted Landmark status to the McGraw-Hill Building's façade in 1979, but the building’s significant lobby also merits Landmark status. With the looming threat of the current renovation plans, urgent protection to the lobby is critical!
Although the original lobby ceiling has been altered, the lobby walls still bear an important, unmistakable resemblance to the building’s iconic exterior. The alternating blue and green steel bands separated by silver and gold colored metal tubes at the main entrance are seamlessly carried into the lobby to complement its green enameled steel walls.
We need your help today to convince the LPC that the lobby’s exceptional original detailing, so clearly a continuation of the building’s façade, deserves the same protection and preservation as the building's Landmarked exterior.
Without your immediate help, this important interior space could be lost forever!
Please join us now! Ask the LPC to act quickly to calendar and designate the exquisite lobby of the McGraw-Hill Building, before we lose a globally recognized architectural masterpiece.
We, the undersigned, implore the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission to calendar and grant Landmark designation to the exquisite lobby of the McGraw-Hill Building.
