JMK Investments, the owner of Sunnyhills Apartments in Milpitas, is threatening to opt out of its HUD Section 8 contract in February 2023. JMK is demanding a $6.7 million contribution from the city in return for further renewing the HUD contract, and the city doesn’t have that kind of money available. Although current Sunnyhills tenants are protected by Enhanced Vouchers, we're concerned that after the current tenants leave, the 149 HUD-subsidized apartments here will gradually be lost to future generations. There are no HUD-subsidized apartment buildings in Milpitas other than Hillview Court, which is at capacity. At the current rate of construction, Milpitas would take years to build enough low-income apartments to offset the loss of Sunnyhills and provide housing for people in need in future generations.
The tenants at Sunnyhills are asking all residents of Milpitas to sign this petition. Please only sign if you live in Milpitas since we are addressing our City Council. You need not be a registered voter or over 18, just a concerned person who cares about your community. Loss of Sunnyhills Apartments would be a devastating blow to the low-income community and to all residents of Milpitas.
TO MILPITAS CITY COUNCIL, SANTA CLARA COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS, AND SANTA CLARA COUNTY HOUSING AUTHORITY COMMISSIONERS:
We the residents of Sunnyhills and Milpitas request that you do everything in your power to preserve Sunnyhills Apartments as low-income affordable housing, for our present and future generations. Please require JMK to sell Sunnyhills Apartments to a nonprofit or public agency that will permanently honor its HUD contract in the future.
