Save Streatham Leisure Centre

Streatham Leisure Centre has been shut since November 2009 due to 'structural damage'. The centre is some 80 years old and has been largely left to decay by Lambeth Council.

Part of the site, which includes the Ice Rink was bought by Tesco in 2000. Tesco's proposed new Hub, which would demolish the leisure centre and the Ice Rink, making way for (another)Tesco supermarket, housing and allegedly providing new leisure facilities is still not showing any signs of progress. Almost a decade later, Tesco are still dragging their heels on the development.

Meanwhile, Lambeth council are keeping quiet about Streatham Leisure Centre re-opening after their survey of the damage and are consistantly referring to the Hub development with Tesco, despite assurances previously that no decision would be made until they knew the full extent of the problems.
 
The centre may cost tens of thousands to repair and Lambeth Council may just simply sit back and wait for Tesco to act, therefore leaving residents without a centre for possible years.

Streatham Leisure Centre is used by a cross section of people from different backgrounds, ages and gender.

This centre has a large pool, health suite, gym and excercise rooms for classes.

A lot of people can't afford to join private gyms and rely on local authority run centres for a swim or a workout. Going to Brixton is not convenient and it involves the extra expense and hassle of travel. Clapham Leisure centre has recently shut for at least 18 months so Lambeth residents are only left with Brixton Recreation Centre.

We need this facility in Streatham! With more TLC and investment the council could keep this centre going, regardless of what Tesco are doing.
