Norfolk County Council have decided that they will axe the Norfolk Youth Service. They say that everything should be provided by the community and by volunteers and not by trained professionals who have been supporting the learning and development of our young people for years.
The 20,000 young people who use the service will see it disappear. That means the council will end funding for activity programmes for young people – that's all outreach programmes and schemes like the Duke of Edinburgh Award and other programmes which have been carried out in partnership with Norfolk's district councils and the police.
People will defend this idea by saying that the youth service 'just runs youth clubs' but it is so much more than that. The youth service provides support for marginalised groups such as young carers and young parents, supports the transition to high school, provide information, advice, one-to-one support and counselling on a wide range of subjects. This is by no means the full extent of what the youth service does.
We, the undersigned, call on David White, Lisa Christensen and Norfolk County Council to abandon the idea to cease County Council funding for youth services.
