This is a course in making and studying media. All coursework is through practical projects; it is assessed through doing the work and writing it up.
The First Year covers core units such as Understanding the TV Industry, Research Techniques and Production Management, combining them with practical projects like making a TV commercial, a short documentary and an animation.
The Second Year delivers units such as Professional Skills and contains work experience. There is also scope for more personal project work and a higher level of skill in cinematography, editing, sound and lighting. You may be asked to work with drama and music students on projects, or to work within the wider community eg on a charity ad or corporate video for a client.
Media Studies work will include studying films and TV programmes and you will be expected to write essays and analyse media texts.
At the end of the year, as part of our prestigious annual media show, you will showcase the work at Greenwich Picture House.
The management at Lewisham college is proposing to cut staff in the middle of our course starting in the second year.
We are currently staffed with a full time tutor, 2 teachers (who teach different subjects) and a full time technician as of next year they are proposing to replace or cut to only one teacher and half a technician.
We do not want this to happen as we believe the management staff are vandalising the practice of content from the college and trying to replace with it Digital Media http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_media
Our second year is very important as we will be applying to universities and a new teacher will not do. They will not be able to provide us with suitable references
