Save Our Salmon - Open The Credit River

PETITION TO OPEN THE CREDIT RIVER

Sport fishing on Lake Ontario involves thousands of fishermen and is worth many millions to the southern Ontario economy yet it is being forced into a downward spiral based on one bad decision by the Ministry of Natural Resources for the Province of Ontario.

THE CREDIT RIVER IS OUR LARGEST SALMON BREEDING RIVER yet the upper river is closed to naturally breeding Chinook salmon and trout. Because of a very small number of people in a few self interest groups and a failing MNR Atlantic salmon program they have shut down the Credit river to other naturally breeding sport fish who WANT to reproduce in the river. This has had a seriously negative impact the number of fish in the north western basin of Lake Ontario, and this needs to change immediately.

The Credit River is the largest river on the northshore of lake Ontario that has been shut off to naturally breeding fish.

The salmon river in new york state is having absolutely huge returns of naturally reproducing salmon and trout. The small rivers and creeks in New York and Ontario are showing much better returns of naturally reproduced fish every year. The Credit river which is 30 % larger than the salmon river in the USA has returns less than 10% of theirs, and only a fraction of many very small creeks and rivers

OPENING THE CREDIT RIVER TO ALL OF OUR NATURALLY REPRODUCING SPORTFISH IS AN EASY WAY OF BRINGING THE NUMBER OF FISH IN OUR AREA OF LAKE ONTARIO BACK UP AND RETURNING PORT CREDIT AND THE REST OF THIS AREA OF THE LAKE TO THE GREAT FISHERY IT ONCE WAS.
