Kohala is a small rural, geographically isolated community located on Hawaii Island, in which three schools are currently located. The Kohala Complex schools consist of Kohala Elementary and Kohala Highschool, which are currently located on neighboring campuses, and Kohala Middle School, which is located on a separate campus in Halaula.

Due to Hawaii DOE budget cuts, the Hawaii DOE has recommended closing down the Kohala Middle School campus at Halaula, and to consolidate all three schools on one campus. A Kohala Consolidation task force was formed and it's final report recommends that the three Kohala Complex schools remain as separate schools. The prepared task force report considered the financial impacts, the educational implications, and the social/emotional issues regarding consolidation and determined that consolidation would not be educationally and socially sound.

In any consolidation configuration, the financial savings would be to the Dept. of Education; however, those savings would reduce, not increase the educational opportunities for our students in this community. A recommendation for consolidation on the part of the Dept. of Education is self serving, one dimensional, and lacks appropriate, sound educational practice and does not consider the unique needs of a rural community.

If you have something to share about the consolidation or Kohala Middle School, it is suggested that community members send their opinions to BOE members via email to BOE_Hawaii@notes.k12.hi.us . Letters can be sent to the Board at PO Box 2360, Honolulu, Hawaii 96804. You can also email the superintendent at Kathryn_Matayoshi@notes.k12.hi.us.
