We, the Alumni of Jack Yates (Sr.) High School in Harris, County, take pride in our school and in a productive interface between our school, the community and the Houston Independent School District (HISD) that is part of our Legacy.
Jack Yates Alumni and its community are a critical part of Jack Yates history at its current location - 3703 Sampson St Houston, TX 77004 with 287,000 square feet of operational space (which we will keep) - is home of notable alumni Debbie Allen, Phylicia Rashad, Ricky Winslow, Jewel Brown, Michael Young, Roland Martin, Johnny Bailey, Santana Dotson, Monica Lamb-Powell, Kevin Cooper, Damion Square and Garnet Coleman, just to name a few.
We, the undersigned, call on HISD Board of Education Trustees to make the necessary changes to preserve Jack Yates High School, in order to sustainably rebuild Jack Yates.
We ask the HISD Board of Education Trustees to recall the vote of the construction and location of the Energy Institute to be built at the Old Lockhart location – 3501 Southmore Blvd - and that the programs of the Energy Institute including its funding to be placed at Jack Yates with new construction scheduled completion date of 2017.
Another option is to relocate the Energy Institute to the West Side of Houston in close proximity of the Energy Corridor or its replacement to the Heights, where it originally started and was successful in its recruitment. The heights location is still within close proximity of University of Houston and Downtown Houston's Energy Companies.
We also request that the Board of Trustees provide legal documentation that the name of Jack Yates High School will remain the same yesterday, today, forever more and that we will keep our property space of 287,000 square feet. This will ensure that there’s no intent to dissolve this historical educational facility, programs and its legacy.
In addition, we request the approval of additional funds allocated to Jack Yates High School that was not used from the 2007 bonds program for special projects to be added and completed with the new construction of the 2015 start date of its current 2012 bonds program funding.
We urge the Houston Independent School District Board of Education Trustees to work with us to make this a reality.
