The Senate just killed a $14 billion package to aid struggling U.S. automakers Thursday night.

This will be a phenomenal case of colossal trickle-down failures:
Almost every company in the nation will soon be affected by this madness. Resources used in the construction of vehicles, such as iron framing or copper wiring, would cause those companies to decrease their profits. With less demand from the Big Three companies those companies may even need to decrease their workforces and as a result increase unemployment even more.

More unemployment may bring more house foreclosures and our economic standing will only become weaker. If an auto plant dies, a supply-plant dies. When those both die… many restaurants die, so do furniture stores, car-dealerships, and newspapers, and the list goes on and on. The death of the auto industry would be far worse and far reaching…

As with all economic dilemmas there are always two perspectives. While there are some beneficial factors that may come with the government’s bailing out the Big Three automobile companies, there are still detrimental reasons why they should not. One of the biggest groups affected by the bailout would be the employees. If the government decides not to bailout the companies, over 240,000 employees directly employed by the company alone will be laid off. The money received will not even be enough to sustain the amount of employees they currently utilize.

Compared to foreign automotive companies, the Big Three have almost three times the amount of employees. To compete, they would have to lower costs meaning their labor costs would be one of the first costs to downsize. Many of their unemployed, therefore, would be consumed by the foreign companies.

Those employees would then find themselves having to settle for jobs with lower wages and fewer benefits since the foreign companies are not unionized. With all the opposing information, the government is still uncertain as to how to proceed. Even until this morning, and after last night disturbing development.

Think you are safe now? Think again!

Dear President Bush:

It is very unusual for a single individual to hold the fate of an entire industry in his hand, but that seems to be the case today, after the Senate failed to agree on a $14 billion "Big Three" rescue plan. This is your present unenviable position.

We, the undersigned, and all people of the United States are mourning with somber spirits, yet aching with mighty strength and perseverance for your mercy, do hereby attempt to restore hopes and dreams to the Detroit economy and auto industry.

Analysts can go into detail on how this will effect America's economy to levels we cannot even begin to fathom. What we do know is that America has sent men to the moon and has developed and built items of science and industry, the number and scope of which border on the infinity. The automobile, among them is more than just a name and number on Wall Street. It's part of our national identity.

Detroit literally put the world on wheels a century ago. Detroit inspired the concept of mechanical conveyance and personal freedom in everyone's garage. Detroit is now producing world class, leading edge products that are, in reality, on par with anything on the market today. The Cadillac CTS, Ford Fusion, Chevy Malibu and Chrysler 300, among others, are as good as any vehicle produced by Toyota or Honda. With even more new fuel efficient models and hybrid vehicles soon to be introduced, the days of Detroit's product lagging behind those of the foreign producers are utterly over. The "Big Three" have demonstrated they can produce world class product across a broad spectrum of vehicle lines. You no longer need an excuse not to buy an American car. The road to this status has been long and arduous. It would be a shame for all this development to be unrealized. Imagine the loss to future American generations who will hear stories of "back when the U.S. made cars" or "how cool Grandpa's 57' T-Bird was" (nobody writes songs about Toyota Corollas!). Imagine a world where future U.S. Presidents arrive at the Hague in something other than a Lincoln or Cadillac.

To lose "our" industry is exceptionally unfathomable. An industry shutdown would absolutely guarantee a "devastating ripple effect" throughout the country that already has a ragged economy. Mr. President, as our Commander and Chief, please preserve our national identity and save our future in Detroit.

We, the undersigned, call on the President of the United States of America to grant aid to the Detroit "Big Three" (Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler).
