Local heritage represents our shared stories, history and connection. It should be protected and celebrated, not reduced to rubble.

Enfield is home to many great local heritage items, each with its own unique story. But as more new development occurs throughout the area this wonderful heritage is increasingly under threat.

Blacket’s Archway is one such item. It was part of the original Royal Blind Society building in William St, Sydney, built by renowned colonial architect Edmond Blacket. It was rescued from demolition and moved to the Vision Australia site next to Henley Park in 1972, where it has remained until now.

Developers are now demolishing the site to make way for more than 70 luxury townhouses. As part of the development application a Heritage Impact Assessment recommended Blacket’s Archway be retained and incorporated into the design. Unfortunately this was not included as a condition of approval, and the developer is under no obligation to keep this wonderful piece of local heritage intact.

It is up to our community to Save Blacket’s Archway.

We call on Burwood Council to seek an Interim Heritage Order to stop the demolition of Blacket’s Archway, and to negotiate with the developer to ensure it is kept intact and relocated to a suitable site in the locality for future generations to enjoy.

The Save Blacket's Archway petition to Burwood Council was written by Ned Cutcher and is in the category Local Government at GoPetition.
