Don't Sell Ku-ring-gai's Community Lands and Parks

With the sale of community land across Ku-ring-gai we are quickly losing our green space, sanctuaries for native wildlife and majestic old gum trees.

Our community land and parks are of immeasurable value. If Ku-ring-gai is truly 'Sydney's Green Heart' these areas must be preserved and not sold off for development and quick profit.

With the recent reclassification of community land in Turramurra, Gordon, the recent sale of community land at 90 Babbage Road Roseville Chase for development and the planned sale of Bates Park (97 Babbage Road) what other parcels of community land will be next?

Why stop this next council sale for development?

The council has approved for sale Bates Park, the reserve on the corner of Babbage Road and Allard Road and converted it’s classification from park and part of biodiversity corridor to ‘operational land’ to be sold for development.

This reserve is important to the amenity of our area. With its mature gums and native vegetation it offers a home for a variety of wildlife. Once it is developed it will be gone forever. Residents regularly see native birds, wallabies, water dragons and even an echidna.

With a land area of 542.8 sqm the park is 30% under the minimum lot size prescribed in the planning instrument and sets an undesirable precedent for large deviations from minimum lot sizes for residential development throughout Ku-ring-gai and is not in the residents’ interest.

Under the 10/50 Vegetation Clearing Code, council will be under considerable pressure to remove most of the large trees on the native vegetated verge between the road and any new dwelling on the block.
