Savannah of Lake Barrington Request for Resident Students to Remain at Countryside Grade School
- Target:
- Enrollment Monitoring Committee Barrington School District 220
- Region:
- United States of America
The Enrollment Monitoring Committee (EMC) of Barrington School District 220 is proposing in its redistricting plan to move students residing in Savannah of Lake Barrington to Roslyn Road school beginning with the 2008 school year.
While the EMC is entertaining several options, the proposals do not comply with Guiding Principles set forth by the school district; however difficult it may be to satisfy the requirements. Savannah of Lake Barrington was redistricted five years ago moving students from Roslyn Road School to Countryside. Savannah appears to be a target for movement when the subject arises. Residents of Savannah of Lake Barrington attended recent EMC public meetings to voice their opposition to moving our neighborhood students to Roslyn. Savannah is not alone in opposition. It appears that all affected residents in the school district oppose EMC proposals which severely impact continuity of education and of a stable educational environment.
We, the residents of Savannah of Lake Barrington, oppose the redistricting of our students to Roslyn Road School or any other elementary school in Barrington School District 220. It is our desire that our children continue their education, uninterrupted, at Countryside which provides for a continued and stable learning experience. Our children are familiar and very comfortable with the facility and have forged many relationships not only with the teaching staff but with their fellow classroom students. This has contributed to a positive learning environment which we demand must be maintained. Five years ago, Savannah of Lake Barrington was redistricted from Roslyn to Countryside. Since the last redistricting, many more children have entered the school system making another move disruptive and unacceptable to this community since it would be resulting in moving families and children twice.
Our request to remain at Countryside assures that our children are kept together with their fellow classmates as they move through their elementary grades. It also keeps our community together with those along and to the west of Kelsey Road. In general, Savannah of Lake Barrington does not border on any other neighborhood areas, the closest neighborhoods are the homes in the Pheasant Ridge subdivision on the west side of Kelsey Road and south of Route 22, all of which attend Countryside. To the north Savannah, is open land and Good Shepherd Hospital, to the east there are wetlands and to the south is an industrial park. There are no natural boundaries for which Savannah borders communities attending Roslyn.
In our request to remove Savannah of Lake Barrington from redistricting plans, we recommend that 1) any redistricting of all affected Countryside students be delayed until the time in which students slated to attend Countryside are moved from Rose – the undeveloped section of the Woods community located north of Penny, and 2) that the EMC consider redistricting areas such as those located north of Route 22 on Kelsey Road to Roslyn. This includes communities such as Kelsey Farms, Shady Oaks, and Heritage Oaks. All of these subdivisions border Roslyn attendance boundaries on more than one side. Shady Oaks residents have neighbors across the street going to Roslyn as well as the Heritage Estates subdivision to the East of the community. In addition, they have roughly the same number of students as Savannah.
