Thanks to all of you who signed this petition online and on paper.
We took your input to Sanford's office and to other local leaders, including the CARTA Board.
Sanford advised us that he doesn't oppose transit and just introduced this legislation to stimulate discussion. However he never withdrew it and hasn't proposed a way to fund local transit improvements of any type.
We have, however, heard from many other local leaders who recognize we need a better transit system.
We'll continue to work on this issue and we appreciate your support. Our plans for the fall are now online at http://hungryneckstraphangers.com/plan-public-transit-progress-for-fall-2015/
Charleston, SC- Local opposition to Mark Sanford’s Anti Public Transit bill is now being organized by Best Friends of Lowcountry Transit. On the eve of major meetings to plan a regional rapid transit system for the Lowcountry to avoid growing gridlock on the roads and offer better mobility options to everyone in the region, Sanford’s attempt to completely eliminate federal funding of public transit is an act of hapless, legislative vandalism.
Since our campaign began, Mark Sanford has assured our leaders that he doesn't intend to end funding for transit or to shut our existing transit systems down, but that he has merely introduced this bill to "stimulate debate." Three other members of SC Congerssional delegation have cosponsored the bill.
Meanwhile, federal funding for public transit in the US runs out on May 31, 2015 unless it is reauthorized by Congress. Full details and updates on our website at: http://hungryneckstraphangers.com/su4t/
We believe it is appropriate for the United States Government to continue to appropriate public funds to support and improve public transit systems in America.
We call upon Congressman Mark Sanford to withdraw his proposed legislation federally defunding public transit and to join with other government leaders in the Lowcountry to plan, fund and build a regional rapid transit system which will provide mobility to residents, relieve traffic congestion and offer the option of living car free in the Tri County region by the year 2022.
