Sam Phillips, the Father of Rock’n’Roll, single handedly changed the world of music and radio. He was also an early activist for Civil Rights not only for black people, but for women and the poor white people of this country.
Born Samuel Cornelius Phillips on January 5, 1923 in Florence, Alabama, he was inspired in his hometown to become the person to make a difference in people’s lives.
Opening his Memphis Recording Service in January 1951, Sam discovered, recorded and nurtured the careers of some of the best, including Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, B.B. King, Little Milton, Carl Perkins, Charlie Rich, Roy Orbison and Jerry Lee Lewis. In 1955 he opened the first all-girl radio station in the nation known as ‘WHER’, and whose motto was “1,000 Beautiful Watts”.
Sam Phillips accomplished so many revolutionary things in his lifetime which changed our world today. His influences still run deep in the hearts of millions, and he continues to inspire young and upcoming singers, songwriters and musicians worldwide. Sam died on July 30, 2003 aged 80. He was a proud member of the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, Blues Hall of Fame, Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame, Country Music Hall of Fame and Rockabilly Hall of Fame.
We, the undersigned, petition the United States Postal Service Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee to issue the Sam Phillips Commemorative Stamp. This would be a way of ‘giving something back’ to the man who gave so much.
If not for Sam, a social revolution in music and radio would have never taken place. It took this man with so much drive, passion, charisma, enthusiasm and wild-eyed fire in his soul to accomplish these monumental things.
Please honor the Father of Rock’n’Roll with this prestigious and ultimate tribute, by honoring him with an official United States Postage Stamp.
Sincerely,
The Undersigned
