- Target:
- NYS Thruway, Town of Tuxedo, Orange County Elected officials.
- Region:
- United States of America
L/G When my father was Supervisor of Tuxedo, he tried and was able to get the funding to build a NYS Thruway Entrance/Exit Ramp at Rt 17A/Kanawauke Rd at the Base of Harriman State Park. When he mentioned it to me a few years ago, I thought to make that idea reality. I envision a thriving Town of Tuxedo. Full of life, Residential communities and opportunities! I need the influence to make it happen! The future ramp location is currently an Emergency vehicle entrance exit ramp that can easily be converted for public use. It's not a hard project. The non-stop commuter benefits alone should warrant a ramp there. Commuters that live in Sterling Forest, Greenwood Lake, Warwick, Monroe, Southfields and Tuxedo will be able to enter/exit the Thruway with ease to avoid traffic, slower speed limits, one lane roads and frequent traffic lights. Making Everyday travel to work faster, easier and less congested.
Imagine If 1/2 of the commuters are non stop commuters and were able to get on the thruway at Rt 17A, Imagine how much traffic is decreased along Rt 17 between 17A and the Sloatsburg/Hillburn Exit. Therefore Allowing those that choose to take Rt 17 and stop along the way a safer, easier and relaxing route of travel. Currently there are 2 options to travel from Sterling forest to the Sloatsburg/Hillburn Exit. Rt 17 and Long Meadow Rd. A Thruway Ramp on 17A would be the 3rd option.
Building a Thruway Ramp at 17A also brings opportunity for the communities in the vicinity to increase business and residents due to the close proximity to the Thruway. The ramp allows travelers to stop and rest, refuel, get food/drink and return to the thruway. THAT BRINGS REVENUE to the town of Tuxedo. Possibly generate future residents and Future business in Tuxedo and neighboring towns due to the easy access to and from the highway. Businesses South of Rt 17A WILL NOT lose business with the building of a Thruway ramp. They should remain the same or gain business. Since Rt 17 will be easier and less congested to travel on, more people would decide to go out to dinner in one of the restaurants in Sloatsburg and the 1 restaurant in Tuxedo.
LIKE I SAID NON STOP Commuters don't plan on stopping anyway. So take them out of the equation. Send them a different route. That leaves the few commuters that WANT TO STOP a safer route 17 to stop and continue on their path. Sloatsburg and Tuxedo are not places that people go to visit. They are residential towns along a once well used highway known as Rt 17. With Rt 87 built, My point has been proven. Tuxedo and Sloatsburg have been slow decline due to lack of travelers stopping along the way. Sloatsburg is building up it's community to attract travelers along the way. Why can't Tuxedo? The Thruway Ramp is the answer to turn the Declining Ghost Town of Tuxedo into a place where people would stop and stay.
For starters, current businesses, Harriman State Park, Renaissance Faire, Golf Courses and Easy Access to Warwick bring MONEY to the towns! Everyone Loves MONEY right? If you build it, they will come! Right? I envision a brand new Red Apple Rest and Tuxedo Ski Center. We could build a hotel at The Ski Center area for use all year round for Harriman State Park campers and hikers, Ren Faire guests that would like to stay more than one day there and Skiers.
In order to make that area flourish again, I need as many people on board as possible! Let's open up Sterling Forest, Harriman State Park, Warwick, Monroe and Tuxedo.
I am in the process of checking if it's State Park land. Hopefully we could get around that hiccup.
Speaking of Revenue, not having a casino in Sterling Forest was the Dumbest Idea EVER! Someone told me that all they wanted was the thruway ramp on 17A to seal the deal. And it fell through. SO MUCH TOWN REVENUE DOWN THE DRAIN BECAUSE OF THAT POOR DECISION! WHO"S IDEA WAS IT TO LET THAT HAPPEN! Seriously, Are you kidding me? Don't even get me started on that failed project and how I want to Slap the person that ruined it.
Back to Traffic:
I have seen traffic on Rt 17 during Ren Faire times, non stop line of cars crawling along to get to the Sloatsburg/Hillburn Exit. Rt 17 will be freed up if the Rt 17A Ramp is built. Imagine trying to go somewhere and there's endless traffic for miles because of an event. Imagine your family member is in the back of an Ambulance that's trying to get through that traffic to get to the hospital.
If there's another horrific accident on Rt 17, all traffic is diverted to Long Meadow and Sterling Mine! The Ramp is another option!
Tractor Trailers that drive through Sloatsburg and Tuxedo to avoid the Tolls, Could bypass the hamlets and get on/off at Rt 17A. Using Rt 17 North from 17A as their travel route making it Safer for everyone and open roads for trucks to drive on. You can't stop tractor trailers on Rt 17, It's a State road. But you can have them bypass the congested parts of Rt 17. Only Local Delivery trucks allowed on 17 between 17A and Sloatsburg Thruway Ramps.
Please Help us make the Emergency access Ramp Rt 17A/Kanawauke Rd. into a public Access Ramp for all traffic use. Lets Help Commuters and Those that live in that area. Lets Help Hikers/Campers have easy access to Harriman State Park. Lets Rebuild Sterling Forest! Please Sign the Petition!!!
