The only off leash area in Kensington contained within JJ Holland park is situated on two sporting grounds which are frequently used for sporting events. This significantly impedes the ability for dog owners to meaningfully exercise their pets.
The off leash area at JJ Holland park is also abutted by a kindergarten, a crèche, a playground, a cycle track, skateboarding facility, the YMCA and the South Kensington Train Station. All of these abutting facilities mean that there is an inherent conflict from all persons wishing to use the JJ Holland public facilities be it for recreational purposes or to gain access to these facilities.
The park known as Riverside Park abutting the Maribyrnong River has only a fenced tennis court and no other abutting facilities which would create a conflict for different users of the park. Moreover it is rarely used other than for the purposes of dog owners and is ideally situated as a safe a practical place for dog owners to exercise their dogs.
We hope you will sign the attached petition to support the City of Melbourne deeming Riverside Park to be an off leash area.
We, the undersigned, request that Riverside Park be determined by the City of Melbourne as an Off Leash Area.
