Let’s put the CO-mmunity back in our CO-op!

Cooperatives are based on the values of self-help, self-responsibility,
democracy, equality, equity, and solidarity. In the tradition of their founders, cooperative members believe in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others.
Since its beginning in 1977, River Market Coop has been an important part of our community. It has provided healthy organic and local foods, with knowledgeable, trusted and helpful staff in an environment that fostered a sense of community where member/owners are valued, known and welcomed.
Changes at River Market Coop in the last several months have caused concern that we are losing much of what we have loved for so many years.
Have you noticed, under the new manager, Evan Sayre, and new HR, Dawn Edlin:
A shrinking Bulk Department, the iconic symbol of a healthy co-op?
A large turnover of long-time staff and loss of morale in those who remain?
Changes in the environmental integrity of products carried?
A decline in the connection of the senior community, due to the loss of the Tuesday Senior discount?
Poor or lack of communication between management and owners?
A sense that the “bottom line” is more important than the many other factors that make River Market special?
If any of these issues have been of concern for you, please take action.
As an owner/member the coop is ours, and it is our responsibility to keep it healthy and thriving for the next generations.
We expect open communication between our board and its members via accessible emails, bulletin boards and letters to the community from members published in The Current. No more secrecy and blinding censorship from the marketing and upper management team.

We, the owners and friends of River Market Community Co-op insist that the board intervene on the actions of the GM, Evan Sayre, as well as Dawn Edlin of the HR department and not renew either contract until a full investigation is performed by an outside party that is NOT Columinate. Reasons being incompetence, refusal to manage within the values, integrity and mission statement of this co-operative. We support our board in returning to the core co-operative principles of democratic member control, member participation, autonomy & independence, and concern for the community.
