In May this year, Devon County Council identified a new walking route route which excludes several Belstone families from receiving free school transport to Okehampton College.
This route is just under 3 miles. It has been passed as 'safe' by DCC. We disagree. This single track, unlit country lane has no pavements. There are blind corners, few passing places and the lane narrows to such an extent at certain points that there is simply no room to take evasive action if confronted with an oncoming vehicle.
Added to this, two miles of the lane carries the national speed limit. In the winter months, this hazardous route will need to be tackled in the dark.
We, the undersigned, call on Devon County Council to reconsider this route with the health and safety of the children in mind.
This path is not reasonably safe even when accompanied by an adult.
August 2012: Many thanks to all of you who have taken the time to sign our petition. Currently our appeal has been over-ruled: DCC believe this route is safe. While we will continue our campaign, please do get in touch if you have had a similar experience with your local council. We would welcome any advice.
