In the Champions League semi final second leg against Arsenal on May 5 2009, Fletcher was shown a red card ruling him out of the Champions League Final.
There have been calls for this decision to be overturned, but apart from mistaken identity, there is no appeal procedure for red cards in UEFA competition. TV replays showed Fletcher touched the ball before he sent Fabregas flying. But the Euro 2008 official Roberto Rosetti decided the Scot had denied a clear goal-scoring opportunity and sent Fletcher off.
As there is no appeals procedure, Fletcher will miss the final against either Chelsea or Barcelona in Rome on May 27.
We the undersigned, call on UEFA to put in place an appeals procedure for the Champions League.
If they can suspend players using Video evidence why not let people appeal decisions using this as well. This red card against Darren Fletcher is unfair as it clearly shows in TV replays that the challenge was fair and that he got the ball first.
If UEFA is about the football and being fair then Darren Fletcher would be allowed to appeal the referee’s decision and still have a hope that he may play in the biggest club game in the world.
