- Community Board #4
- Region:
- United States of America
We are petitioning to have the name Rev. Wiliam E. Thompson Way added to 169th thru 170th streets on Teller Avenue, Bronx, NY.
Rev. Thompson founded the first African American Church in the neighborhood in May of 1956. The Community Church of Morrisania served its members as well as the members of the community by assisting with health care needs, housing and other social issues.
Rev. Thompson was a Social Worker at Spofford Detention Center. After retiring from Soicial Work, he became a NYC elementary school teacher and worked at P.S. 53(one of the first African American teachers at the school).
Rev. Thompson believed in teaching our children about their history. He started a Black History pictorial museum in the Parish House after the original church moved into its current building.
He founded many of the church's ministries including the Martin Luther King Jr. Ministry to teenagers. Not only did they learn about the life of Dr. King, but also how important it was to give back to their community through education. This Ministry has resulted in those young people becoming sufficient in their endeavors. We are blessed to have a JAG, a Principal, a Physiotherapist / Psychiatrist, Teachers, Professors, Directors, Managers, Motor men and women and Social Workers just to name a few.
Through his leadership other ministries were founded which include Missions, Social Outreach/New Life, Mary Bethune Circle, Harriet Tubman, Circle, Phyllis Wheatly Circle, Single Parents and our newest ministry the S.O.S. Youth Ministry.
Additional name change for 169th thru 170th streets on Teller Avenue Bronx, NY.
We are petitioning that the above streets have REV. WILLIAM E. THOMPSON WAY added to the street numbers.
