On August 18, 1967, a fastball from Angle's hurler Jack Hamilton struck Tony Conigliaro in the face. His season was over; he missed all of 1968 as well.
Despite a comeback of a few years, Tony suffered from complication the rest of his life as a ballplayer, sportscaster, and prevented him from living a long life, having succumbed to a heart attack and a stroke in 1982. He remained in a coma until he passed away on February 24, 1990 at the young age of 45.
The youngest man to win a HR title, the youngest in the league to ever reach 100 homeruns, Tony was a fan favorite being a local boy who grew up on the North Shore.
Tony's #25 should be retired and placed on the façade with the numbers of other Red Sox greats. Wouldn't this season, the 50th anniversary of the "Impossible Dream" season of 1967 be a perfect time?
We, the undersigned, call on John Henry, Tom Werner, and the rest of the ownership group of the Boston Red Sox to retire Tony Conigliario's number and to hoist #25 up to the façade of Fenway Park, even though he is not a member of Baseball's Hall of Fame having his career cut short by an injury sustained during the game of August 18, 1967 -- 50 season ago.
