Prior to my daughter's suicide, I was not aware paracetamol could be lethal. I find it more than a little disturbing that such a drug should be available, with no restrictions on the quantity purchased, from outlets such as supermarkets and convenience stores.
Surely, a product that has the potential for causing death, should only be sold in outlets where professional advice can be given to the purchaser and restrictions can apply. Medical professionals advise a limit of 8 tablets per 24 hours as an adult dose. Packaging of paracetamol suggests seeking medical advice if product is needed for more than 48 hours. No where is there a warning that an overdose of the product could result in death.
I, personally, was able to purchase 12 packets, each containing 24 tablets, from one supermarket without question - nor any advice of any dangers of overdose. Drugs, even non-prescription drugs, should only be available from pharmacies, where advice can be given on the use of the product.
I believe removing drugs from sale in supermarkets and convenience stores could prevent further suicides such as my daughters.
We, the undersigned, call on the Australian Government to make changes to the legislation that currently allows the sale of non-prescription drugs through supermarkets and convenience stores.
The sale of all drugs should only be available through pharmacies.
