The status of Iranian musicians after 1979 Revolution has worsened because of the following evidences:
1) Non-governmental music is not supported by Iran's regime.
2) Musicians need to pass the authorization process to have the permission to perform.
3) Female solo singers are forbidden from performing for men entirely.
4) Since the revolution, Iranian instruments are not allowed to be shown on state television programs.
The Status of Iranian Musicians after 1979 Revolution
Despite the hopes that the 1979 Iranian Revolution would result in more freedom for the Iranian people it is a pity that systematic governmental censorship has actually worsened the status of musicians in Iran. In fact only musicians who compose suitable pieces for governmental propaganda purposes are supported.
Musicians or music ensembles are required to receive official permission for performances (so called "authorizations") from the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance in order to be allowed to perform in concert. Since bureaucratic Red Tape is overwhelming and official authorizations are always given only a few days before scheduled concerts, musicians are constantly unsure of whether they will be allowed to perform or not. Frequently, 'authorizations' are not granted until 48 hours before a concert which doesn't allow for proper publicizing of the performances.
Female musicians are singled out under this system for censor. In most cities female musicians have no permission to go on the stage. Female solo singers are forbidden from performing for men entirely.
Since the revolution, Iranian instruments are not allowed to be shown on state television programs and private citizens are forbidden to create private TV channels in the country to show them.
Because of these conditions, We, the musicians of the world request that the Iranian government restore the freedom to perform to Iranian musicians and allow all of them, (and in particular, female musicians) to play their music and express themselves freely on the stage and on Iranian state TV channels.
