Mount Isa is one of the last remaining Queensland cities that has stuck to its guns and prevented large retail outlets from trading on Sundays. This decision was made by council in order to allow the smaller, local retailers the chance to remain viable in the community without the added pressure of having to compete with big business on one day of the week.
This has benefited the Mount Isa community by providing local suburban grocers close to their homes and spread across the city, rather than all being located in the CBD. Older people, the mobile impaired, people who have lost a driver's licence or simply choose not to drive, families walking with their children, or even people who like walking their dogs to the corner store, now have easy access to one of these local businesses right across the city. But if this changes and large chain stores are allowed to open on Sunday, these businesses will suffer, maybe even losing the fight to remain profitable and be forced to shut down.
The question we are putting to the people of Mount Isa is, 'What kind of City do you want?' This is the community's opportunity to decide what they want for their own home and if they don't want to see these small businesses disappear then signing this petition is a great step in helping preserve the current state of Mount Isa.
The petition of electors of the Mount Isa electorate draws to the attention of the Mount Isa City Council the desires of the people of Mount Isa to restrict Sunday trading to the current exempt shops.
We petition the MICC to resist the application of the National Retail Association to amend the trading hours order to allow large retail stores to open on a Sunday.
The opening of Sunday trading hours to large retail stores will threaten our small convenience stores, pharmacies and newsagents. We want Sundays kept for rest, relaxation, family time and sport.
