The vaccine mandate for municipal workers is threatening the livelihoods and futures of a number of valuable Whistlerites. We now know so much more about the current state of “the virus” than we did when this policy was implemented. We don’t need to be scared anymore; transmissibility is high, however severe sickness and death counts remain exceptionally low.
Vaccine and booster uptake has been very high in our community. Every member of our community that needs, or wants protection from these vaccines, have received up to 3 doses. Besides this fact, Omicron is infecting it’s contacts indiscriminately, no matter how many shots are placed in its way. The good news; by all accounts it’s only as harmful as the average common cold.
Excluding the small population of unvaccinated residents from so many social events and interactions in the name of community health has resulted in little to zero effect in stopping the spread of Omicron. Excluding an even smaller number of workers from our jobs and therefore our livelihoods, will have no bearing on community health. Being vaccinated against Covid 19 protects only the recipient from harsh symptoms, these vaccines are not stopping transmission.
We ask that the Whistler Mayor (Jack Crompton), Whistler town council, and the RMOW, rescind the Mandatory Vaccination policy set to take effect on March 1, 2022.
