The Paramedic is the certification level of professionals that care for patients requiring the full range of advanced out-of-hospital care.
Paramedics have knowledge, skills, and abilities developed by appropriate formal education and training, including invasive and pharmacological interventions to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with acute out-of-hospital medical and traumatic emergencies.
These skills carry a greater risk for the patient if improperly or inappropriately performed, are more difficult to attain and maintain competency in, and require significant background knowledge in basic and applied sciences.
The North Carolina Community College System offers many options for earning an Associate's Degree in Emergency Medical Science and Western Carolina University offers a Bachelor's Degree in Emergency Medical Care.
As a citizen of the State of North Carolina, I believe that due to the knowledge and skills required of Paramedics, a minimum of an Associate’s Degree should be required to obtain a license.
I am asking for the passage of legislation creating the requirement for all future Paramedics to earn a degree prior to licensing.
