During a recent youth softball game governed by USA Softball, a 12-year-old player was on first base and began running to second as the ball was hit—exactly as she had been coached. The batter made solid contact and ran toward first base. Within seconds, the batted ball struck the runner while she was advancing.

The runner did not intentionally interfere with the play. She was already in motion, focused on advancing to the next base, and had little to no time to react or avoid the ball due to the speed and proximity of the hit. Despite this, she was called out under the current interference rule.

We are calling on USA Softball to review and revise the current rule that results in an automatic out when a runner is struck by a batted ball.

While the intent of this rule may be to prevent interference, its current application often penalizes players in situations where they have little to no time to react. In real game scenarios, especially at the youth and amateur levels, runners are taught to advance on contact. When a ball is hit sharply, a runner may be struck before they can reasonably avoid it. Calling an automatic out in these moments does not reflect intentional interference or unfair advantage. It reflects a lack of realistic consideration for reaction time and player positioning.

This rule creates confusion, frustration, and inconsistent outcomes for players, coaches, and families. It also places umpires in difficult positions, forcing rigid enforcement without room for situational judgment.

For young athletes who are still developing awareness and instincts, this rule feels especially harsh and discouraging. It takes away from the spirit of the game and can negatively impact player experience.

We respectfully request that USA Softball:

* Reevaluate the automatic out ruling when a runner is unintentionally struck by a batted ball
* Consider incorporating intent, reaction time, and positioning into the rule
* Provide clearer guidance that allows for fair and consistent interpretation by umpires

Softball should reward skill, awareness, and fair play—not penalize unavoidable situations.

By signing this petition, we stand together in asking for a rule that better reflects the reality of the game and supports the development and enjoyment of all players.
