Recent cases of osteosarcoma cancer in West Salem have been diagnosed in 7 children ages 6 - 21 years old. Three have recently died from this cancer. This is what is called a "cluster".
The two young individuals who passed away in July of 2012 and in November of 2012 were both diagnosed in 2009 a week apart and lived within a mile of each other. Parents of these children want answers. Osteosarcoma strikes an average of 800 people in the US every year. Salem's population is aroung 160,000. West Salem's population is about 19,000. Seven children diagnosed within a 3 miles radius is incredibly high.
Students at West Salem high school and parents are wondering what is going on. West Salem provides five elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school where many students are involved in sports and play on sports fields and nearby water streams. KGW, KATU and KOIN news channels have been following this story and have done several reports since October 1, 2012. Fluoride and radon have been linked osteosarcoma as a possible cause. Governor Kitzhaber, Senator Ron Wyden, Salem Mayor Anna Peterson, Oregon Health Authority, CNN, Salem-Keizer School District, area churches and West Salem schools have been sent this petition. Statesman Journal and The Oregonian have recently published news articles. Senator Jackie Winters and Senator Merkley have responded to help.
Some cities and communities around the U.S. have removed fluoride from their water systems. West Salem's community needs to pressure the EPA and Oregon Health Authority to conduct water and soil testings of the area. Read the Oregon EPA website where it says that fluoride "may cause bone cancer". One middle school and it's surrounding ball fields is being eyed as a possible contaminated site because most of these kids either attended this school or played Little League on the ball fields. Machinery and steel industrial plants sit adjacent to the school. If you support this idea and are interested in seeing tests conducted as to the cause of these osteosarcoma outbreaks, please sign this petition.
LATEST UPDATE! EPA SAYS THEY WILL HELP US!!! THANK YOU EPA. AND THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO SIGNED THIS PETITION. IT CAUGHT A LOT OF ATTENTION. NOW HOPEFULLY WE WILL GET ANSWERS BEFORE ANYMORE CHILDREN AND ADULTS GET SICK.
We, the undersigned, request that the state EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) conduct water and soil testings to determine if toxins are in our soil or higher than average levels of fluoride is in our water system. Our community is rich in families in a suburban and rural environment.
We want answers!
