Alberta separatism is a movement that advocates the secession of the province of Alberta from Canada either by forming an independent nation, by creating a new union with one or more of Canada's western provinces, or by joining the United States.

Alberta was established as a province on September 1, 1905.[1] Alberta separatism comes from the belief that many Albertans hold that they are culturally and economically distinct from the rest of Canada particularly, Central Canada and Eastern Canada because of economic imbalances whereby Alberta is a net over-contributor to the system of Equalization payments in Canada.[2] Furthermore, the majority of Alberta's trade flows north/south with the United States and not east/west with the rest of Canada.

Recent election results, not only mean the beginning of the end of fair treatment for Alberta, but undoubtedly, the entire West.

It may be now that we need to consider just how far we need to go to provide stability, solidarity, economic freedom and choice for our civilians, our culture and our business.

The Clarity Act[1] (French: Loi sur la clarté référendaire) (known as Bill C-20 before it became law) (the Act) is legislation passed by the Parliament of Canada that established the conditions under which the Government of Canada would enter into negotiations that might lead to secession following such a vote by one of the provinces. The Clarity Bill (C-20) was tabled for first reading in the House of Commons on 13 December 1999. It was passed by the House on 15 March 2000, and by the Senate, in its final version, on 29 June 2000.[2]

Alberta is tired of footing the bill and ongoing equalization payments for the East and receiving no care in kind when times have turned. Mr. Trudeau has done nothing to equalize conditions between provinces, and has further divided us from the nation of Canada.

If the petition supports that inclusion of sistering provinces, I believe it paves the way for Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and others to join this movement. We need to start the ball rolling here though.

Please support this petition if you feel that now is the time for Alberta to explore its options whether that be through the restructuring of equalization in Canada, or of its own Republic entity.
