On July 18, 2006, Garth Snow officially confirmed his retirement and was named general manager of the New York Islanders following Neil Smith's dismissal after 41 days on the job. There was much criticism directed the Islanders way for firing a Stanley Cup-winning GM after such a short tenure in favour of Snow, who at the time of his hiring held no experience in management. Fan favourite, Pat LaFontaine, who had intended to return to the team as senior advisor to the owner, resigned the post the same day that Smith was fired.

LaFontaine decided the fit was not right for him after owner Charles Wang ignored his advice to wait a few days before making a final decision about Smith. On November 15, 2010, Jack Capuano was named interim head coach of the Islanders after head coach Scott Gordon was fired from that position by GM Garth Snow amidst a 10-game losing streak by the team. The Islanders retained Capuano as the full-time coach to this day. Many alumni were mistreated for many years, unlike other organizations where they are revered and celebrated. They have also tampered with the traditional colours of orange and blue, by trying to modernize and market to a different demographic with the colour black and altering the logo to leave out the Island. An overwhelming amount of fans despise this look.

The Islanders have made a number of moves and non-moves dissatisfactory to most fans and have changed a great dynasty with a winning culture and identity, to a mediocre club, despite the abundance of high draft picks from years of losing. This past year ownership changed, after what was termed a successful season. This outcome did not meet the fans expectations. However, VERY unpopular moves were made and concerns were not addressed, on and off the ice. The team has regressed dramatically and are in danger of losing their most prized possession, in fan favourite, captain John Tavares. They were forced to leave their surburban home on Long Island. The new arena they play in is unsatisfactory in many facets and the media coverage is poor.

Besides these issues, the teams assets have been grossly mismanaged and coached poorly. Development at the entry level and the professional level is inept. Many fans are on the verge of boycotting, by refraining from purchasing tickets. The atmosphere is poison. A change is vital to the health of a once great entity. Two men came into a situation that could have bore fruit, but rather brought neglect and apathy through inexperience and comfort. The fans have had enough and demand new ownership make their mark and show a measure of commitment.

We, the undersigned representatives of the fan base of the New York Islanders, call on the majority owners, Governor Scott Malkin and Alternate Governor Jon Ledecky, to remove the current administration and coaching staff from their positions. This request is directed namely towards General Manager Garth Snow and Head Coach Jack Capuano.

We are looking for action that will clearly reveal the dedication and commitment new ownership has for the restoration of a once proud franchise with a unique and rich history. Our patience has been tested beyond an acceptable measure and our support has never wavered in the face of such blatant mismanagement and misrepresentation. The culture must change for success to be imminent and for the passion and support of the fans to be kept aflame.
