A new Shiite personal status law has been passed in Afghanistan’s parliament house and signed by the president Karzai in March 2009.
This law contravenes the Afghan’s own constitution on gender equality and also many international treaties signed by the Afghan government, including those specifically related to women's rights. Under this law a woman needs her husband’s permission to leave the house and marital rape is legalized.
