BACKGROUND
Lesedi Benjamin Petla was a young man from the rural villages of Pankop, Nkanagal Region, Mpumalanga Province.

He was hit by a car during the national #FeesMustFallProtest, he was leading from the front as the SRC Leader. He was not a student of TUT but a student activist within TUT campus, he was a black conscious individual and a selfless leader of note. He died with his boots on demanding free quality education for all students.

He was not petty nor delusional, all that he wanted was you and me to have access to education at the tertiary level.

He represented students during meetings, but he was seen monitoring queues of students applying for registration year in year out. He had the best interest of the marginalized and down trodden at heart.

He genuinely believed in the war for free quality education.

In his memory. We, the immediate beneficiaries in waiting of his idea must request the Office of the MEC of Culture, Sport & Recreation, Ms Norah Mahlanug to initiate a process that will ultimately lead to the renaming of Nokaneng Stadium to Lesedi Benjamin Petla Stadium.

In his contribution to the war for free quality education, TUT University management has resolved that from next year one of the bursaries will be issued to an academically deserving student in the studies of Information and Communications Technology (ICT). It will be known as the Lesedi Benjamin Phehla scholarship fund..

Phehla displayed leadership qualities that would have made him a great leader of the country in the near future. The next generation must know what Lesedi Benjamin Petla stood for.

May his soul rest in revolutionary perfect peace.
