Louis Riel was executed for High Treason against Canada in 1885. Having a street in Canada's Capital named after him is an offence against decency and honour.
We the undersigned call on the City of Ottawa to rename Louis Riel Drive, located in Ward 19 Cumberland. It is inappropriate anywhere in Canada, but most particularly in the nation's capital, that any public street, place or facility be named after a man who was tried, convicted and executed for High Treason against Canada.
Riel was also the man who ordered the murder of Thomas Scott, a member of the Canadian Party.
We recommend that the street be renamed in honour of Thomas Scott, the victim, or Baptiste Lepine, the lone man among Riel's men who stood against this murder.
