The students at Jonathan Grant High School in Spanish Town have been complaining about the long uniforms. I am a past student, therefore I can relate and attest to this. It makes them feel uncomfortable, because the material is thick and the place is hot. This is unfair to the students. More focus is being placed towards the dress code, instead of academic performances. Both the principal and teachers are missing the main purpose of the education system; which is to educate, inform and bring awareness to help develop the youths for the world.
This new rule have led to an increase in student's being absent, because they are being sent home for wearing skirts three inches below the knee. It has become unproductive in the school system. Less students are present as a result. I understand the need for a set standard in the dress code for school, but wearing the skirts to the ankle is excessive, especially in this tropical climate.
The solution that can be implemented to solve this problem is to set a rule for the skirts to be made three inches below the knee and/or give students the option to purchase the skirts at the school to ensure that it is in alliance with the school's rule and expectations.
We, the past and current students, are bringing the awareness of discomfort with the uniform to the Ministry of Education to remove the dress code policy.
Please stand with us to vote for the removal of the unfair uniform policy.
