Remove & Prohibit Cell Towers on West Ada School Properties

Cell Phone Towers emit non-ionizing radiation. This type of radiation is being investigated as a cause of Leukemia. The emissions from cell towers were also classified as a possible carcinogen by 'The World Health Organization' in 2012. Many of the experts would like to see the classification be put in a higher risk category due to the latest research showing damage even at levels, below the current guidelines. The American Cancer Society states, "Very few human studies have focused specifically on cellular phone towers and cancer risk." In essence allowing these towers on our children's schools, is making them the "test subjects" that will determine the studies outcome.

It is highly recommended that when it comes to children the 'Precautionary Principle' be exercised. In short, until we know the effects of something, children should not be exposed to it. Here are just a few compelling pieces from the 'Precautionary Principle.'

1.) “Where there is uncertainty as to the existence or extent of risks to human health, the institutions may take protective measures without having to wait until the reality and seriousness of those risks become fully apparent” (Christoforou, 2002).
2.) The American Public Health Association (APHA) affirmed endorsement of the precautionary principle as a cornerstone of public health for the protection of children’s health. In a 2000 policy statement, the APHA encouraged governments, the private sector and health professionals to promote and use the precautionary principle to protect the health of developing children (APHA, 2001).
3.) Precautionary measures are of particular importance in regard to children, who are generally more biologically sensitive, may be unable to protect themselves; and for whom such exposures may carry greater lifetime health risks than they do for adults.

The school board and district have been made aware of the risks and are refusing to remove the towers. They state that a public outcry is the only way that they would. Let this be just that! They have been informed that students are already being diagnosed with cancers and still no action. I have provided them with exponential amounts of peer reviewed studies and they are choosing to ignore what they are being provided. After many emails and meetings the school district and board continue to deny our children a safe place to get an education. In fact, they are actively seeking out companies to install new towers on more school properties. They can no longer claim ignorance in this matter and it is their duty to protect our children while at school. At the very least it is expected that they not intentionally cause harm to the children.
