For a decade now, handgun caliber restrictions and magazine restrictions have been in effect after a tragedy involving a high caliber handgun.
Sporting shooters are unable to use handguns with a caliber of more than .38 inch or 9mm unless they are involved in a specialized competition e.g. metallic silhouette which requires a high caliber handgun.
The law entitles sporting shooters to own high velocity, low caliber cartridges but not the lower velocity, high caliber cartridges with a larger projectile. Sport shooters are also limited to 10 rounds or less which creates a major disadvantage during competition shooting events.
The purpose of this petition is to remove unnecessary caliber restrictions and increase the maximum magazine capacity from 10 to 15 keeping public safety in mind.
We, the Sporting Shooter call on the NSW Government to remove unnecessary restrictions regarding handgun caliber and magazine capacity.
Currently, Sporting Shooters in NSW are unable to posses or use handguns with a caliber of more than .38 inch unless they are competing in a specialized event e.g. Metallic Silhouette.
The current law entitles Sporting Shooters to own high velocity, low caliber cartridges but not the lower velocity, high caliber cartridges which are popular for competitive shooting. Sporting Shooters are also unable to possess or use a handgun fitted with a magazine which has a capacity of more than 10 rounds.
These laws give competitive shooters in Australia a major disadvantage in many international events e.g. IPSC as competitors in foreign countries have the advantages of higher capacity magazines which results in less reloads. Also, competitors who use a high power cartridge are awarded more points than lower power cartridges.
The purpose of this petition is to remove unnecessary caliber restrictions and magazine capacity restrictions while keeping public safety in mind. This includes removing all caliber restrictions and increasing the magazine capacity from a maximum of 10 to a maximum of 15, which is an ideal magazine capacity for competitive shooting while also keeping public safety in mind.
