We are currently seeking the approval from the Ottawa City Council to renovate and add an addition to 227 Mackay Street. This is a lengthy process due to the restrictions imposed on the home owners by the Heritage Conservation District (HCD) in New Edinburgh. As a result, our plans will need to recive approval from the City Council. Because of this, we are seeking both input and support from our community.

For the last nine years we have resided at 157 MacKay Street. About a year ago we began our hunt to find a new home for our growing family. After having considered many different neighbourhoods we came to the realization that New Edinburgh was the best place to raise our family. Despite our knowledge regarding the hurdles associated with undertaking a major renovation with an addition in a heritage district, we moved forward with the purchase of 227 MacKay.
As many of you know, 227 MacKay is in a state of decay, with a crumbling foundation and many structural deficiencies that make the original home uninhabitable. We see this project as an opportunity to renew one of the last ‘eye sores’ in our neighbourhood.
Currently, we are in the process of consulting with the various groups charged with heritage oversight and applying for permits with the City of Ottawa. Through this process, we have discovered that the main reason this house has been left to decay for so many years is simply due to the difficulties associated with obtaining approvals to do the required improvements in a Heritage District. We are, however determined to persevere and make this a viable home for our family while fully respecting the heritage guidelines and in keeping with the design elements that are consistent with existing homes in the neighbourhood.
The designs you see here will be submitted to the City and Heritage Sub-Committee for approval and will then be voted on by Council in September. We have maintained the original style of the home, which was built in 1890. Our architect, Derek Crain, has worked to keep the original design of the house while also making it suitable for modern-day needs.
If you are sympathetic to our effort to create this responsive and heritage-sensitive new home in our community we would greatly appreciate your support. By signing this petition you will show your support for the New Edinburgh community and having a voice in its rejuvenation and growth.
If you have any questions, concerns or input regarding this project please feel free to contact us. We would be more than happy to discuss any questions or concerns you might have.
Thank you for your consideration.
