According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) collected in 2006, 4,810 motorcycle occupants were killed while driving, a 127 percent increase from 1997. This rise in motorcycle fatalities is no coincidence; gradually within the past 14 years more and more states have repealed and/or weakened their original motorcycle helmet laws.
As of July 1st, 2000 the motorcycle helmet law in Florida states that any persons under the age of twenty years are always required to wear a helmet. All persons over twenty-one years of age without a minimum of $10,000 in medical insurance are required to wear a helmet (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). This is simply not adequate coverage to maintain the safety of our citizens. From personal experience I have become supplementary aware of the dangers of riding without a motorcycle helmet.
Serious head injury is common among fatally injured motorcyclists and therefore should be avoided at all costs. Helmets are the answer to improve the probability of survival when it comes to motorcycle accidents; just as seat belts improve the likelihood of survival in car accidents.

Money and freedom are some of the more common arguments against the motorcycle helmet law, but since when do those things become more important than the lives of those we love? We must fight to protect the ones we love.
We, the undersigned, call on the Florida government to create an complete coverage motorcycle helmet law.
Reinstate a mandatory Motorcycle Helmet Law in Florida.
