We are seeking the reopening of Folkestone East station, with a major campaign for this station to be added to the next rail franchise contract.
We believe the current make-up of rail services (two stations, both in the more affluent west of the town) is a telling reflection of the town as a whole, with the large population in the east being poorly served and neglected.
The reinstatement of the station would be straightforward as it still exists (it is on the mainline between Folkestone Central and Dover) and could form a key part of regeneration for this part of the town. This should be as well as, not instead of, the existing local stations.
We also support proposals to use the existing line to Folkestone Harbour as a public transport route, potentially for trams, as part of an integrated system.
We, the undersigned, call on Network Rail and the Department for Transport to reinstate Folkestone East Railway Station.
