Waipatu Settlement on State Highway 2 is currently a dangerous strip of road. We have many kaumatua, young children and families residing here who are regular pedestrians through the community.
We have a busy Marae which is utilized daily, Aunty’s Garden, Waipatu Kohanga Reo, Tamatea Rugby and Sport Club, Drillers Poultry Farm, Bay Espresso Café, and driveways with 2-6 dwellings (2-6+ cars).
When the Marae is busy with tangihanga, hui or wananga (a weekly occurrence) proceedings can not be heard over the noise of the traffic and visitors (particularly children) who aren’t familiar with the area/traffic are at increased risk.
Many of our whanau have been in accidents or hit by cars over the years, these accidents would not have occurred or been so severe had the speed limit been lower.
We, the undersigned, are concerned residents, whanau and regular visitors to Waipatu.
We urge our local council and transport authorities to act now to reduced the State Highway 2 speed limit to 60km/h, from Kenilworth Rd to the north side of the Karamu Stream.
