Special Olympics is an organization that functions on a federal, state, and community level. Special Olympics are a series of sporting events for individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities to participate in and allow physical training and promote self-esteem.

“The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.” (www.SpecialOlympics.org)

Special Olympics is a movement that was started on July 20, 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver. On this day Special Olympics was acknowledged when the First International Special Olympics Games were held at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois.

Eunice Kennedy Shriver founded Special Olympics on the belief that individuals with intellectual disabilities were far more capable than commonly believed and they deserved the same opportunities and experiences as others without intellectual disabilities.

Beverly Perdue has taken the money for Special Olympics out of the budget for next year. We are asking individuals in the community and the school systems to sign a petition to put money back into the budget for Special Olympics.
